Toby Sherbow
Toby lives in Eugene, Oregon, and he’s a chemist who synthesizes fluorescent dyes for studying biological systems. Toby is passionate about science, the environment, and being in the snow! He spends as much time as he can skiing throughout the year, in pow, or skiing volcanoes in the summer. He thinks it’s important to always respect Mother Nature and enjoy the journey when out in the mountains. Toby joined the CSO project because he’s interested in learning more about our snowpack, the impact we can have by informing others in the community and participating in snow observations surveys.
Most of Toby’s snow science background comes from skiing: “I do a lot of backcountry climbing and skiing where making observations about conditions, reading avalanche and weather reports is essential to making good decisions in the backcountry. My only formal snow science training comes from taking an AIARE 1 two-day course and seasonal brushing up on avalanche and snow science. I am excited to learn as much as I can from others.”
What is community science? Why join CSO?
The term [Community science] means that “everyday citizens can participate in the scientific process”, says Toby. He thinks others should join CSO this winter “to inform ourselves and the public about the ever-changing snowpacks, and the impact snowpacks have on our environment.”
