Matthew Scragg
Matt is a hydrologist with the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (yep—he’s a colleague of CSO Science team members Gabe and Katreen!). He earned his M.S. in Earth Systems Science from the University of Alaska Fairbanks and now lives in Anchorage. His snow-science experience includes conducting snow surveys to support river-ice hydraulic modeling in Interior Alaska, hydrologic modeling in both Alaska and Arizona, and collecting snow observations to inform ski risk-management decisions.
Passionate about applied engineering hydrology, rivers, and—of course—snow, Matt keeps the mantra “Good snow is coming!” close at heart. Whether he’s searching for the softest turns or tackling a tricky problem at work, he strives to “always ask questions and learn from others.”
What is community science? Why join CSO?
“Community Science means providing a platform and network where individuals can observe their environment and contribute knowledge to answering questions,” says Matt. He is joining the CSO project to collaborate with other professionals and observers who are passionate about snow, and he encourages others to get involved—because, as he puts it, “more observations lead to more accurate, meaningful science.”
