Emily Tidwell
Emily is an action sports photographer who lives in Reno, Nevada. She is a constant learner and thinks it’s important to stay open to new experiences. Passionate about snow, science and people, she hopes that we will see a better future for the next generation. Every day she reminds herself about how beautiful the small things can be. Emily’s career as an action photographer has always centered around snow sports. For the past 10 years, she has spent as many days as possible outside during winter to experience a multitude of different snowpacks. Her fascination with snow only increased after moving to Tahoe, California, and witnessing the amount of backcountry travel readily available outside her back door. She has completed her AIARE Level 2 backcountry course and she spends several days a year with the Sierra Avalanche Center, capturing their forecasters digging pits and observing snow. She picks their brains on the skin track; asking them questions to further her knowledge on terrain traps and the status of the snowpack.
What is community science? Why join CSO?
Emily has always been fascinated by the weather, and as a snow observer for CSO, she not only gets to live out a bit of a snow science fantasy, she also gets to better our knowledge on snowpack as a community, “And that’s really exciting!”, she adds. To Emily, [community science] means “spreading important information to a greater audience and opening more science-related questioning to a broader demographic outside typical scientific environments.”
