It’s fun to measure snow! A tribute to ambassador Sarah Sallade
CSO ambassador Sarah Sallade goes about her work as a snow scientist a little bit different than some. While trained as a forest ecologist with a focus on carbon cycling she began her dive into participatory science with the GLOBE Observer Program. Celebrating 30 years this year, GLOBE was the original citizen science program that connected students, teachers, and scientists across the world in a variety of disciplines. Sarah worked collaboratively to develop curriculum activities and measurement protocols that would allow individuals and groups to make assessments about the carbon storage and growth in their school yards and local ecosystems.
Sarah’s passion for connecting students to “real” science opportunities continued as she taught high school biology and environmental science, and later crafted project-based units on matter, energy, forests, and cities for middle school students. As it goes, things change sometimes and she unexpectedly found herself home-schooling her children and lacking a scientific community. As a skier and snow lover she was thrilled to discover the opportunity to be an ambassador for CSO.

She and her family now live in Littleton, New Hampshire (NH), and she spreads the joy of snow measurement across the state through her volunteer work with organizations that include outdoor enthusiasts like the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) and Granite Backcountry Alliance, conservation groups such as Ammonoosuc Community Trust, community members who visit the Littleton Public Library and Rek-Lis Brewing, environmental educators who collaborate with the New Hampshire Environmental Educators organization, and students from all types of learning environments. She adds: “Shout out to Groveton, NH Elementary!”

We all count on snow and there is no better way to remember its importance
than to get out and measure!
She couldn’t do what she does without the support of the CSO science team, the local researchers at AMC, and all of the partner organizations that advertise and host events.

She wants you to remember that we all count on snow and there is no better way to remember its importance than to get out and measure! She looks forward to another great snow season next year.
