Modeled Snow Distribution

Welcome to mountainsnow.org!

Explore comprehensive, multi-source snow information in real time.

The CSO project creates maps of snow distribution by including your snow depth measurements in our modeling process.

Explore the data and see how your measurements help!

Data sources

  • Community Snow Observations data — models snow distribution on a daily time step and at spatial resolutions of 25-100 m. We assimilate snow depth measurements from snow recreationists and snow professionals.
  • Snow Data Assimilation System (SNODAS) — models snow over the conterminous United States (plus a portion of Canada) on a daily time step, but at a spatial resolution of 1 km. SNODAS assimilates in numerous sources of data, including Snow Telemetry.
  • MODIS — The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer is an instrument aboard the Terra and Aqua satellites. There are numerous products available from these missions. The MOD10A1 provides daily coverage at a 500 m spatial resolution.
  • Sentinel 2 — The Copernicus Sentinel 2 mission provides revisit times on the order of 5 days and a spatial resolution of 10 - 50 m. Its imagery provides an unparalleled look at Earth's surface.
