Create an Account at CitSci.org

  1. Go to citsci.org and click on the ‘sign up’ button.
  2. Enter your name and email, and create a user name and password. Hit submit.
  3. Complete your registration by clicking on the link in the email that you will receive.

Join the CSO Project at CitSci.org

  1. Login to citsci.org and click on the ‘join a project’ button
  2. In the search box, enter ‘community snow observations’ and hit the return/enter key.
  3. Click on the ‘join’ button in the ‘options’ column. That’s it!
  4. Feel free to explore the various tabs (Resources, etc.) for information about the project.
  5. While one of the tabs is ‘submit data’ you should instead submit all project data through the citsci.org app.

Linking the CitSci.Org App to the CSO Project

There are a few steps that have to be performed to connect your app to the CSO project. If you sign out of the app on your device, or your device signs you out, just repeat these steps any time.

1. Open the app on your phone and sign in (if not already signed in).
2. Authorize access so that the app can use your citsci.org details.
3. Select the Community Snow Observations project.
4. Select the Snow Depth Data data sheet.

Collecting Data with the CitSci.Org App

1. Open the app and you will see your chosen project and data sheet.
2. Tap ‘add observation.’ View the MAIN tab.

  • Leave the ‘search time’ field blank.
  • You may enter comments if you wish (optional).
  • You may tap the camera icon and take a photo of your measurement site (optional).
  • It is required to enter a ‘name’ for the measurement.
3. While still on the MAIN tab, for latitude and longitude, simply tap the ‘get current location’ and let your phone do the work for you. You will need to select the ‘allow’ option when your phone asks if you would like to allow the app to access your location.
4. On the SPECIES tab, there is nothing to do.
5. On the SITE DATA tab, simply enter the snowpack depth either in inches or in cm.
6. On any of the tabs hit ‘Save Observation.’ At this point, you will return to the screen from step 1. Your observation is now saved to your phone (but not yet uploaded). You can continue on your trip, stopping and repeating this process (steps 1-2).

Uploading Data with the CitSci.Org App

1. Open the app and tap ‘My Observations’.
2. You will see a list of all observations collected on your phone but not yet uploaded. Tap ‘Upload All’.
3. Your observations will disappear, indicating that they have successfully been uploaded. Note: if you made any incorrect observations,  you can use the delete button to individually delete those measurements prior to uploading.

Congratulations, you are now an official citizen scientist for CSO.
