Mountain Hub #dataforgood partner, Community Snow Observations (CSO), needs our help!  Next time you get out into the snow, take out your avalanche probe, measure the snow depth, and enter it into a Mountain Hub snow condition observation in the snowpack depth field. Just like that, you will contribute to a global critical citizen science effort that will help predict snow conditions and improve snow safety in the mountains.

Enter our giveaway not only to treat yourself, but to collect #dataforgood and support CSO.  Let’s work together and get behind the CSO!

All you have to do is:
1.  Download Mountain Hub
2. Report one snow depth observation on Mountain Hub
3. Just like that, you’re entered into our lottery drawing

Winner will be notified Wednesday, December 20.

Hi.

I am just wondering if you are looking for data outside of AK? I am a data scientist with a background in remote sensing AND I am in to skiing. I was hoping to develop an algorithm that could use machine learning with satellite imagery to measure SWE on a daily basis over very large areas. I have a start at this algorithm (see http://snowstats.strikingly.com/), but one thing that kept it from working was the limited amount of ground truth. CSO strikes me as uniquely situated to get that ground truth.

Anyway, I have connections with providers of large amounts of satellite data (descarteslabs.com) and am very interested in seeing where this all goes. Additionally, I will be moving to Colorado this summer and would be interested in volunteering in Summit County next year, if you are interested in volunteers outside of AK>

Glad to hear that someone is looking to collect data like you guys are! Can’t wait to learn more!

Hi Clair, Thank you for reaching out to us! We are seeking measurements from anywhere, anytime there is snow on the ground; the more measurements, the better.
