Mike Janes

Juneau, Alaska, United States

My name is Mike Janes and I live in Juneau, AK. For a living, I am an Avalanche Forecaster / Educator; I am passionate about mountains and avalanches. I think it is important to continue to push the boundaries about what we know about the natural world. Every day, I try to remind myself about being humble about what I think I know.

Why did you join the Community Snow Observations project last winter?

I joined the Snow Obs project to help contribute knowledge and data we are already collecting so we can help the research community improve what we know about snow in the mountains.

What does the term Citizen Science mean to you?

Average people collecting data to contribute to the science community.

What is your experience/background in snow science?

10+ years of avalanche forecasting and education.

Why should more people join Community Snow Observations this winter?

More people who contribute observations will help fill in current gaps in knowledge about snow distribution and depth.
